CO-ASIS&T Summer of Tours 2023: Collections, Art, and Design at CML’s Martin Luther King Branch

Thursday, August 3, 2023 (10:00 AM - 11:15 AM) (EDT)

Description

This is an in-person only event. Learn about features that set the Martin Luther King Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library apart from any other public library at this illuminating in-person program. In a building dedicated by Martin Luther King III on its opening October 18, 2018, the MLK Branch inspires customers in Columbus’ King-Lincoln District.

Learning Objectives:

1.The background of the Black Heritage Collection at the MLK branch, the process for selecting the collection, writing the collection scope statement, and some of the challenges in selecting, growing and maintaining the collection.

2. Introduction to original art on display from African and leading Columbus artists.

3. The building architect's philosophy of design as an act of hope, in his own words in a recorded presentation. The 2018 building’s intentional architectural design (how the footprint and floorplan are intentional in incorporating elements aligned with Moody Nolan's philosophy).

The local host will be Brian Stettner, Adult Services Librarian, MLK Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Other presenters will be Chanie Scott, MLK Branch Manager, and Tim Thompson, Selection Librarian at the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
