Whose Memory Matters? Power, Representation and Indigenous Knowledge in GLAMR Institutions (SIG-III)

Galleries, libraries, archives, museums and records institutions (GLAMRs) are often viewed as trusted custodians of society’s memory. Yet the knowledge they collect, preserve and represent is shaped by decisions about whose voices are valued, whose histories are remembered, and whose perspectives are marginalised. This presentation, by Spencer Lilley, Associate Professor, School of Information Management, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, examines why Indigenous peoples are challenging the dominance of Western knowledge systems within GLAMR institutions and explores ongoing efforts to transform collections and services to ensure they are more representative of Indigenous perspectives. The presentation will assert that Indigenous knowledge is not static and only fit for preservation, but must be seen as living knowledges that require Indigenous authority, relationships and stewardship.

To mark the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, ASIS&T SIG-III, in collaboration with SIG-USE, the ASIS&T Oceania Chapter, and the LIANZA Research SIG, is pleased to present this event.
